This week, students in the Extended School Year (ESY) summer program brought Science to life with the help of Wahluke School District school board member Seth Weeks. Last spring, Mattawa Elementary Principal Brandy Ross and District Director of Teaching and Learning Missy Stevenson learned about the power of gardens to teach Science. It was decided that Mattawa students would plant and tend a garden as part of ESY this summer. Thus far children have studied the life cycle of seeds, learned about photosynthesis and this week they literally "dug in" and pulled weeds in the pumpkin patch. This fall when the pumpkins are harvested, the students will point with pride to the fact that they helped make the garden a success!
